Contraception
There are several contraceptive options available, each with its own characteristics, such as the contraceptive pill, the IUD (hormonal and non-hormonal) and Implanon.
Contraceptive Pill
The contraceptive pill contains synthetic hormones that prevent ovulation. It is a practical option, but it needs to be taken daily.
IUD (Intrauterine Device)
An IUD is a small device inserted into the uterus. It can be hormonal or non-hormonal (copper).
Hormonal IUD releases progesterone and can reduce menstrual flow.
Copper IUD does not contain hormones and prevents fertilization.
Implanon (Contraceptive Implant)
Implanon is a small hormonal device placed under the skin of the arm, releasing progesterone to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years.

What is better: pill or IUD?
Is the IUD safe for all women?
Does Implanon have side effects?

The hormonal IUD is a device inserted into the uterus that releases hormones (progestin) to prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and changing the lining of the uterus. It is highly effective, lasts 3 to 5 years, and can reduce menstrual flow. It is inserted by a doctor and can cause side effects such as irregular bleeding or cramping. The hormonal IUD does not protect against STIs, so condoms are necessary for this protection.
Precautions beforehand: consult a gynecologist, undergo the necessary examinations and avoid sexual intercourse in the previous 24 hours.
Aftercare: Rest for the first 24 hours, expect some irregular bleeding for the first few months, avoid sexual intercourse and intense exercise for a few days, and seek medical attention after 4 to 6 weeks. Watch for side effects and consult your doctor if necessary.

The non-hormonal IUD (copper IUD) is an intrauterine device that uses copper to prevent pregnancy. It prevents fertilization and makes the uterine environment less suitable for egg implantation. It is highly effective, hormone-free, and can last from 5 to 10 years. However, it can increase menstrual flow and cause cramps in the first few months. It does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, so condoms must be used.
Precautions beforehand: consult a gynecologist, undergo the necessary tests and avoid sexual intercourse in the previous 24 hours.
Aftercare: Rest, expect irregular bleeding for the first few months, and avoid sexual intercourse and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. See your doctor after 4 to 6 weeks to ensure the IUD is in the correct position and monitor for any side effects, such as severe pain or fever.

Implanon is a hormonal contraceptive implant inserted under the skin of the upper arm, releasing the hormone etonogestrel. It prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus and changes the lining of the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is highly effective, lasts up to 3 years and is reversible, with fertility returning quickly after removal. It can cause irregular bleeding and changes to the menstrual cycle, as well as other side effects such as headaches and mood swings. It does not protect against STIs, so condoms must be used.
Precautions Beforehand: Consult a gynecologist and undergo tests to check your health.
Aftercare: Rest and avoid applying pressure to the site. Return to your doctor after a few weeks to check the positioning of the implant, and watch out for side effects such as irregular bleeding or headaches. Use sunscreen on the insertion site for the first few days.
